Published 1 year, 6 months ago in My life.Has there ever been a more farcial end to a major sporting event than the Cricket World Cup final? What rules have to change to prevent this from happening again?

Each Captain has the right to protest about the light & conditions if they look dangerous. I would have to get it by a cricket ball traveling at 95km just because I could not see it!
It was either it ends today, or tomorrow… their choice. Such is the game of cricket.
Sure, but how about a rule that the final or semi-final of a series of such importance has to be played at a ground with lights?
Cricket at an international level is clearly poorly run, this is just the latest and maybe worst example. When weather intervenes as it already had why wouldn’t they have rules that bad light because of late play meant the end of the game?
On a positive note, how fantastic to see the Australians absolutely cream the opposition when the fickle sports media had them all but written off before they left? Bravo to Ricky Ponting and his team, they must be one of the greatest teams playing any sport. Certainly their record suggests so.
Poorly run, they don’t see it as such… it’s a cartel is it not, much like the AFL. The people no longer own the sport, they do and what they say goes. And often the discussions are high farce.
Congratulation to Ricky & the guys… live it up now while you can guys, it seems that if you have a spate of losses you will be written off as quickly as other jump on the band wagon or can’t people remember New Zealand? Fickle Fans
I thought it was hilarious and a fitting end to what has been, by most accounts, a pretty pathetic world cup. A fine bit of sportsmanship by the Sri Lankans coming out to face the final three overs in the pitch dark and a nod to the Aussies for bowling spinners.
The rules for rain-shortened games are already incomprehensible. What is needed is a little common sense, not more rules. I actually thought an opposition captain could concede defeat. If so this would have been a perfect time to exercise the power.
Apparently the Captains knew the rules better than the umpires and the match referee admitted that they stuffed up big time. Since both sides had faced 20 overs the game had been played.
Since the World Cup has been a bit of a disaster they are ringing in the changes for the next one. Making it shorter for one. Assumedly taking out some of the amateur teams like Ireland - how did they get into the final 8?
Apparently the Indian Cricket Board is considering having a vote of no confidence in the ICC, which might be a little extreme. Of course the ICC are blaming the organisers, which they appointed!
Ireland got into the 8 by winning games!!!! More than some of the so called “Test” countries did. Why would India consider a vote of no confidence, except of course in their own team!!!!!!!! Cricket is such a parochial little game it’s no wonder the ICC doesn’t have the experience on the world stage.
