Should Peter Garrett quit the ALP?
Published 10 months, 3 weeks ago in Making News.Garrett, whom I have previously admired, is now in the position of defending URANIUM MINING and the ALP’S SERIOIUSLY COMPROMISED FORESTS POLICY and the ALP’S LOVE FOR GEORGE BUSH!!!! Who’s he kidding? Only himself, everyone else knows he has to get out and get back to lobbying from a base with which he is not in basic conflict.

They have completely used him up yet, he needs to be a drunken husk of a man before he dies in office from alcohol related diseases.
i think there’s hope for him. He’s permanently damaged his credibility but that shouldn’t stop him making a contribution as a member of the Greens or in charge of some greenie organisaition.
Peter Garrett shouldn’t quit the ALP. No one should quit the ALP. More people should join the ALP. Vote Labor!!
Oh, what a brilliantly argued contention.
Seriously though, people’s views, especially where politics, policies, and our environment and society are concerned, often do change in the presence of new information. Peter Garrett may have genuinely changed his point of view, and it’s good that he has an open mind to new ideas and is not too proud to change his opinion. It’s easy to stick with one point of view and never consider the opposing arguments, but it takes guts to hear them and admit that you are convinced.
At the end of the day, it’s up to Peter Garrett what policies he endorses - no one is forcing him at gunpoint to be an ALP member, and even if they were, there are differences of opinion over uranium mining within the ALP. If indeed Peter Garrett is going against his own beliefs, then that’s his choice.
I completely agree that we - and our politicians - should be prepared to change our opinions in the face of new facts. That’s not Pete’s problem. His problem is that he clearly harbours views that are opposed to the ALP’s, and when he dares to try to express them he gets shot down - and RECANTS. Time to jump ship and go somewhere that supports him - he has no power where he is now, he just looks like Rudd’s lapdog.
Don’t you know yet mecontramundum that the best way to treat your enemy is to keep him close….
Garrett is a shell of the man I once voted for as a voice against uranium. The ALP is a den pf professional politicians who will do anything to win power.
I have to agree with Lady C re the change of view issue. I wouldn’t want a politian who is unable to change his/her viewpoint in the light of new facts/information etc.
Saying that though I do also have to agree with mecontramundum that at times he doesn’t seem to be sitting comfortably within the ALP and appears to be visibly squirming when he has to express the viewpoints that his masters want to hear.
Marywalsh is an ex-labor party member.
The Greens are on the attack I see. Peter, Peter come out to play!
Good on Peter, he has begun to understand the real world, not the fantasy of the Greens, who appear to want us to move back to the cave era.
I don’t think the Greens want that. They want the opposite - to pull us out of the fossil fuel era.
